A free residential special school for children the world had no classroom for.
Velugu follows a holistic approach to education, taking equal care of mental and physical well being. We balance activities across the schoolroom, the playground and every space in between. Since each special child needs to be taught in a special way, the learning is tuned and shaped according to individual abilities.
Above everything, education here is imparted in the right spirit — with care, respect and love. The teacher is much more than an educator: she or he is a guardian and, often in the child's eyes, a surrogate parent.
Every child has a family and needs to find a place in society. Our efforts are to make each boy and girl as independent as their ability allows, and to help them become useful, confident members of their family and community.
We train them with appropriate skills, help them in rehabilitation, and work with other social workers to help them find jobs. Some move on to mainstream schools, some to work, some to families of their own.
Children from the age of three are welcome — brought by parents, guardians or social workers. We teach children who are deaf or hard of hearing, and children with intellectual disability, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, autism, microcephaly and multiple disabilities.
